With Fridays 83-80 win over the Knicks in Montreal, Toronto closed out the pre-season with a record of 7-1, matching the franchise record for most exhibition victories and ensuring theyll finish camp with the leagues best record this fall. What does it all mean? Nothing, Dwane Casey said following his teams pre-season finale at the Bell Centre. Not one hill of beans. Exhibition, you can take this record and - I cant say what I want to say. But you can do whatever you want with the [stat sheet], because exhibition doesnt mean anything except for our conditioning and our timing and our rhythm that it gave us. Indeed, exhibition success is difficult to measure and theres no telling how it may translate to the real games. The last and only other time the Raptors have tallied seven pre-season wins was in 2006, just ahead of one of the franchises best campaigns which ultimately resulted in a division title. Last year they went 6-1 - their last game was canceled on account of a slippery court in Milwaukee - before starting the season 6-12. The lesson here: youre not likely to find much correlation between fall results and regular season success. Good teams, especially those with returning players, tend to excel year round, but there are always outliers at this point in the year. Going into Fridays action, the list of teams just below Toronto in exhibition standings included Cleveland, Golden State and Houston. No surprise there. It also included Detroit, New Orleans and Utah. So, who knows? We dont get a trophy for this? Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri joked. I think its the coaches time, its the players time, he continued. I think these guys have done a good job in preparing. I call it preparing. Its tough for us. I stay away, go to Europe to scout and get involved in other things just because you want to get down to it right away. Were here, a week out. And the reason why the Raptors feel good about where theyre at, just days before Wednesdays season opener, has almost nothing to do with wins and losses. Weve got a lot of guys from last year so we really dont have to figure out too many things, said DeMar DeRozan, who led Toronto with 15 points in Fridays exhibition finale. I think its mainly for the new guys to get implemented with our system on both ends. Its not too hard at all. As promised, Casey used Fridays contest to extend the minutes of his regulars, hoping to get them in rhythm and get comfortable in a more conventional rotation. One of his starters, Jonas Valanciunas, learned an early-season lesson courtesy of his defensive minded head coach. The third-year centre was beat on three box-outs in the opening five minutes, each resulting in an offensive rebound for Samuel Dalembert, before he was pulled and spent the rest of the half on the bench. Whatever message was sent at intermission, it was received in the third quarter when a noticeably more aggressive Valanciunas scored nine of his 13 points and added three boards. As a team, the Raptors held New York to 15 per cent shooting in the frame, besting them 14-7 on the glass and outscoring the visitors 25-11. As for those newcomers DeRozan referenced, they looked ready to start the new campaign on Friday. James Johnson was held without a point, on two shots, but earned praise from Casey after the game for his defence on Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. Casey called it his best game of the pre-season. Lou Williams did what he does best, knocking down a pair of big fourth-quarter shots and finishing with 12 points off the bench. Their first real test will come on Wednesday, following four days of practice and preparation, when they host the Hawks to open the franchises 20th season. Part of the NBA Canada Series, the Raptors played their third pre-season game in Montreal. Along with Halifax, it’s the only Canadian city outside of Toronto to host three exhibition contests. DeRozan has made all three trips, first as a sophomore in 2010 and then again a couple years later. Its great, the Raptors all-star guard said of the atmosphere. Just coming off the season that we had last year and the success, just to come back around and be in Montreal, just to get that support in a different part of Canada definitely means a lot. I think We The North gives the country some pride and a good feeling about the Raptors, Casey added. Now we have to do our part in continuing to compete at a high level and I think its the way we do compete. Winning is important but I think people appreciate how hard our guys play, how we play defence, how we share the basketball and play together. Respect for Nash Canada basketball took a hit late Thursday evening when the Los Angeles Lakers announced that Victorias Steve Nash has been ruled out for this coming season with a back injury that likely spells the end to his brilliant 18-year career. That said, the news did give Canadians and folks around the basketball universe an opportunity to pause, look back and appreciate everything the future Hall-of-Famer did as a pioneer for the sport in this country and one of the premier point guards to ever play the game. Its sad, Casey said of the two-time MVPs likely retirement. But hes done so much good; its hard to get sad for Steve because hes meant so much to Canadian basketball, to the NBA period. Hes the prototypical point guard that you teach your point guards to be like. We shouldnt be sad. Casey remembers his days coaching in Seattle - an assistant with the SuperSonics - when Nash used to come down to workout with Gary Payton, an iconic point guard of the previous generation. Ive known him for a long time, said the Raptors coach. Nothing but love and respect for his game. Nashs resume is undeniable. An eight-time all-star, the 40-year-old is third on the NBAs all-time assists list and has appeared in more post-season games than any other player without a ring in history. Amazingly, he was at the helm of the leagues best offence for nine straight years, on two different teams. The way that Phoenix [team] played, Casey said, that style of play was unique because of him. I think a lot of people tried to emulate that style of freewheeling, up and down basketball but unless you have a Steve Nash its very difficult to play that style of basketball. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Panthers say theyd like to find a replacement for longtime No. 1 wide receiver Steve Smith in this years NFL draft. The big question is when theyll do it. The Panthers have the 28th overall pick, but the NFC South champions have a variety of needs after getting hit hard in free agency, and could go in a number of directions with their first-round choice. General manager Dave Gettleman said recently that wide receiver, offensive tackle and cornerback are among the teams top needs, but qualified that statement by adding he wont got out of his way to land one. "When you reach for a position of need youre in trouble," he said. Gettleman said he has some reservations about drafting a receiver in the first round because it often takes them longer to adjust to the NFL game than those who play other positions. "History tells you that its a very difficult position to assimilate into (the NFL), especially with the current game being played at the college level," Gettleman said. Gettleman called it a "wide receiver heavy" draft that includes several players whove put up big numbers. He said the trick is finding guys who can easily make the transition to the next level. "Ill look at a guy and hes caught 90 balls ... but of those 45 were flash screens," Gettleman said. "The other 45 he caught, he ran to three spots. So, do they understand coverage? Theyre going to have to learn the whole route tree. How long is it going to take them to assimilate? Its an issue. Its a problem." Smith was released in a salary cap move earlier this off-season. Replacing his toughness and production wont be easy. He caught 836 passes for 12,197 yards and 67 touchdowns for the Panthers in 13 seasons. However, after averaging 76 receptions for 1,284 yards receiving and 5.5 touchdowns in his first two seasons playing with quarterback Cam Newton, Smiths numbers fell off in 2013. He caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four TDs. The Panthers signed free agents Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant and Tiquan Underwood, but none is expected to become the next No. 1 receiver in Carolina. Five things to watch from the Panthers in the draft: ON THE FRONT BURNER: Jordan Gross retired this off-season, leaving a huge hole at left tackle — one the Panthers potentially could address in Round 1. Gettleman said there are some tackles in the draft dont have "left tackle feet," but said that doesnt necessarily matter. "There are only so many elite tackles," he said. "There are plenty of guys playing left tackle in this league that dont have classic left tackle feet." Finding a left tackle might take on added importance given Newton is coming off ankle surgery this off-season. FIRST ROUND SUCCESS: The Panthers have had tremendous success with their first-round picks the last three seasons. They grabbed defensive tackle Star Lotulelei from Utah at No. 14 in 2013, and he looks like hes going to be around the league for quite a while. They drafted linebacker Luke Kuechly at No. 11 in 2012 and quarterback Cam Newton first overall the year before that. Kuechly was the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, while Newton was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. BLUE GOOSE: Last year, Gettleman said the Panthers needed to add some "hog mollies," or big linemen. This year, the Boston native switched gears, saying if there is a "blue goose" pass rusher available at No. 28 he wouldnt pass on him. KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- Kevin Koe made a last-rock draw to the button Saturday to score a 9-8 win over Quebec in an extra end that lifted him into the final Sunday of the Canadian mens curling championship. They face John Morris and British Columbia, who had no trouble disposing of Koe Friday night in the 1-2 Page playoff at the Tim Hortons Brier. "Last night they just beat us up and down the lineup so you know I think weve got better to offer than last night," said the Alberta skip, seeking his second Brier title. "Hopefully we can play like we did today." Quebec skip Jean-Michel Menard said it was disappointing but they were happy with the way they played, including Saturday mornings win against three-time Brier champion Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba to get into the semifinal. "Were very satisfied the way we played the last five or six games," said Menard. "We played a great game this morning against Stoughton and now we gave these guys a good run today. Its disappointing because the way we were playing I thought we maybe had a sniff to win . . . The magic ran out today." Menard and third Martin Crete, second Eric Sylvain and lead Philppe Menard capitalized on Manitobas mistakes and were more in control than the 7-6 final score suggested in the earlier game. He was heavy and wide, almost flashed and left a steal of two for Jean-Michel Menard and Quebec to tie it up. "Wed played great to get up to get up three and just to give it up with one bad shot is not ideal for sure," said Koe. A point in eight and a steal in nine gave him an 8-6 lead coming home but Menard made a last-rock double in 10 to force the extra end. Koe used the hammer to score the winner with his last rock. Quebec will meet Stoughton for bronze Sunday morning. Menard opened the Brier at 3-4 and made an amazing run to get in to the playoffs from fourth place, capped by a win over Alberta in their final round-robin game Friday. LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool beat Swansea 4-3 on Sunday to maintain its Premier League title challenge thanks to two goals each from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson. The goals took Liverpools tally in the Premier League this season to 70, overtaking Manchester City as the top scorers, and left the fourth-place team just four points behind league leader Chelsea. However, manager Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on Liverpools title hopes. "I think for us, were concentrating on our performance," Rodgers said. "Were just concentrating on winning games. No one is really talking about us for the title anyway. Everything now is about Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal." Sturridges first came in the third minute when he received a through ball from Raheem Sterling before rounding Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and firing into an open goal. The striker then provided the assist for Henderson to double Liverpools lead in the 20th from the edge of the area. Jonjo Shelvey pulled one back for Swansea against his former club three minutes later with a long-range strike that went in off the crossbar. He held his arm up in apology to his former club, a gesture that received applause from the Liverpool fans. But the home supporters were shocked into silence soon after when Wilfried Bony equalized in the 27th minute, with his header from Jonathan De Guzmans free kick taking a slight deflection off Martin Skrtel. Theyll do so against a winless Oakland Raiders club that is off to its worst start in 52 years. The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks dropped a two-point decision to the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 19, seven days after losing for just the second time in their last 19 at home with a setback to Dallas. Faced with the possibility of losing three in a row for the first time since Oct. 23-Nov. 6 -- and for the first time with quarterback Russell Wilson under center -- Seattle responded with a 13-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers. While it wasnt an emphatic end to their two-game skid, the Seahawks saw Wilson lead a late scoring drive. Carolina went up by three points on a field goal with 4:37 to play, but Wilson came back to lead a 9-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped with his touchdown pass to tight end Luke Willson with 47 seconds to play. We have some guys on the verge (of coming back), said Carroll. Unger could help get Seattles traditional ground game back on track. The Seahawks rank second in the NFL with 148.4 yards per game on the ground, but Lynch has not posted a 100-yard rushing game since Week 1 and his 62 yards versus Carolina was his highest total in three weeks. The Pro Bowl back hasnt scored on the ground in four straight games. Wilson, though, has been able to make some plays with his feet this season to at least help move the ball on the ground. Oakland, meanwhile, has gotten little out of its run game, managing an NFL-worst 69.6 yards per game. That probably wont change this weekend as Seattle is ranked sixth against the run (89.6 yards allowed per game) and fifth in total defense (316.1). Oakland did manage to hold Cleveland to a mere 39 rushing yards a weekend ago and an average of 1.6 yards per carry. That marked the sixth time since 2012 that the Raiders allowed less than two years per carry. With the Raiders unable to move the ball, Carr has had to attempt 249 passes. He has completed 61 percent of those for 1,517 yards. Last week he had the first ever 300-yard passing game by a Raider rookie and he is 31 yards shy of setting the Raider rookie record for passing yards in a season. That is currently held by Matt McGloin, who posted 1,547 yards last year. With nine touchdown passes on the season, Carr is three shy of matching Andy Daltons NFL-rookie record of 12 TD passes through the first eight games of the 2012 campaign. Oakland is tied for second in the NFL with eight sacks allowed, but that doesnt mean Carr hasnt been pressured a lot on the year. In fact, Cleveland got to him three times as the club was forced to go pass-heavy. Hes got a great release, probably one of the best releases that Ive been involved with, so he gets the ball out and doesnt take a lot of sacks like that. Thats all part of it, its a big part of it, Sparano said of Carr. Hell be tested again as the Seahawks bounced back from getting zero sacks against the Rams to bringing down Carolinas mobile quarterback Cam Newton three times. OVERALL ANALYSIS A stop in Cleveland was obviously the best chance for Oakland to get its first win of the season on this quick two-game road trip. LOS ANGELES -- Steve Nash will be out of the Los Angeles Lakers lineup for at least two weeks with nerve root irritation. The Lakers announced the latest injury setback for the two-time NBA MVP on Monday after Nash consulted with a back specialist. Nash played just 13 minutes in the Lakers loss to Minnesota on Sunday night before sitting out with pain in his back and hamstrings. He is expected to receive an epidural block on Tuesday, and will be evaluated in 10 days. "Im a little emotional," Nash said after Sundays game. "Its hard. I really want to play, and I really want to play the way Im accustomed to playing. To be so limited is frustrating, and also to not know (when) kind of a clean-ish bill of health is (possible) is a little daunting, too." Nash is the NBAs oldest player at 39. Although the Canadian star still shows flashes of his heyday as arguably the best point guard of his generation, he has struggled with injuries since shortly after joining the Lakers in summer 2012. He missed 32 of the Lakers 82 games last season, breaking his left leg in the second game before struggling with injuries affecting his back, hip and hamstrings down the stretch. He also missed Los Angeles last two playoff games despite getting several epidural shots for pain management. Nash has struggled with back pain for years, but his broken leg caused new woes. TORONTO - At the ripe old age of 26, Amir Johnson - the teams second-most experienced player - is one of only two Raptors starters that can give a firsthand account of what it will be like to compete in the postseason. The Raptors longest-serving members, Johnson and DeRozan have had two coaches and 56 different teammates in five seasons with the club, all without appearing in a single playoff game. Before becoming a fixture in Toronto, Johnson logged 56 minutes in 11 postseason contests spanning over two seasons with the Pistons. At the time, the forward was primarily a spectator, mentored by the likes of Rasheed Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and Antonio McDyess. Johnson is a man of few words but hes shared a couple with DeRozan, who is poised to make his playoff debut next month. TORONTO -- Wins continue to elude Drew Hutchison. Hank Conger homered and drove in a career-high five runs to power the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. Hutchison (1-3) gave up three runs and four walks over just 4 1/3 innings to extend his winless streak to seven starts. "You cant walk four guys," Hutchison said afterwards. Unfortunately, rookie reliever Marcus Stroman also struggled. He was pounded for four runs over 1 2/3 innings after replacing Hutchison as Los Angeles earned its third straight win. Toronto came into this four-game series riding a season-high, five-game win streak. "Thats the way it goes in this business sometimes," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "You think everything is going in the right direction, then all of a sudden, wham, you run into some pretty good pitching and a good offence. "Theyre just out-playing us. Which is to say, the top of this years draft class is not as dynamic or exciting as the 2013 class of Nate MacKinnon, Sasha Barkov, Jonathan Drouin and Seth Jones and its not as strikingly promising as the highly-anticipated 2015 slate of Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin. But it would be a disservice to damn Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Leon Draisaitl and Michael Dal Colle with faint praise. "They are all very good prospects, theyre all going to play in the NHL, they all should turn out to be very good players for a long time," one NHL scout said. But the draft is all about projection. And where MacKinnon, Barkov and Drouin were projected as first-line forwards and Jones was projected a likely No. 1 defenceman – destined for greatness -- this years crop of forwards is projected more as second liners with defenceman Ekblad perhaps getting "top pairing" billing though not necessarily a future dynamic No. 1. Good, maybe very good, but not necessarily great. The draft is also about question marks and, according to the scouts, even the elite picks this year have a few. And once one gets outside the top five of this years draft, question marks really abound. "There are some really talented kids in this draft, and not just at the top either," an NHL scout said, "but I dont recall a year recently when there were as many question marks. Skilled kids who lack size; players who might have issues with attitude or commitment. It seems to be a really volatile draft. Good luck trying to figure out this one." That said, in the eyes of the scouts, at the top, its rock solid, and, really, it has been all season long. Barrie Colt defenceman Aaron Ekblad is No. 1 on TSNs Top 60 Final Rankings for the 2014 draft, a position hes owned or had a share of since last September. Seven of the 10 scouts surveyed by TSN to compile the rankings had Ekblad at No. 1. No scout surveyed had him outside of the top three. Only two other prospects got first-place votes. No. 2-ranked Sam Reinhart, a centre with the Kootenay Ice, had one and No. 3-ranked Sam Bennett, a centre with the Kingston Frontenacs, had two. "The difference between the top guys this year is not significant," a scout said. "Thats why youre hearing more talk of teams drafting with position in mind." To say nothing of those question marks. For example, as good as the 6-foot-4, 216-pound Ekblad is, some scouts wonder if he an upside greater than being a steady, reliable two-way defender. Is there a dynamic quality there that is usually associated with a potential first overall pick? Barrie head coach Dale Hawerchuk, a former NHL star, doesnt know about dynamic, but he does know impactful, because thats what Ekblad has been from the moment he showed up to Barrie as a 15-year-old who was granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada to enter the OHL a year early. "Hes been a top pair, shutdown defenceman who played against the best players in our league from the day he got here," Hawerchuk said, "and theres no doubt in my mind, none whatsoever, that hes going to be a really good top pair, shutdown defenceman who plays against the best players in the NHL. Hes been impactful since Day 1. He does it all and he does it all consistently and hes going to be a 15 to 20 year top-pair NHL defenceman." This years top prospects earn rave reviews for some specific trait or quality, but the praise is accompanied by a question. Reinharts hockey sense, for example, is widely hailed, elite level, as good as it gets. But will his average speed and size put a second-line ceiling on him or reduce his effectiveness against men? Bennetts complete game – equal parts skill, smarts, spirit, edge and work ethic – is lauded but can an average size centre translate that style to the NHL against men? No. 4-ranked Leon Draisaitl, the Prince Albert Raiders German-born and –trained centre, has a big NHL frame and can make plays but will the lack of a dynamic step keep him from being a first-liner? No. 5-ranked Michael Dal Colle, the Oshawa Generals rangy winger who is equally adept at shooting or making plays, but will his play without the puck be an issue? And yet, for all the questions being asked, scouts concede these five are all good NHL prospects with a strong likelihood of having long NHL careers. But there is a high degree – higher than usual – of subjectivity this year. Nowhere is that more evident than in the players, ranked Nos. 6 through 10 on TSNs list. No. 6-ranked Nick Ritchie, the Peterborough Pete winger, has all the physical tools to be the consummate scoring power forward but theres been a lot of immaturity, inconsistency as well as some injuries in his game. No. 7-ranked Jake Virtanen, the Calgary Hitmen winger, is another who has all the tools to be a scoring power forward but some scouts are a little wary because he tends to get tunnel vision when he has the puck. No. 8-ranked Haydn Fleury, the Red Deer Rebel defenceman, has the size and speed scouts love but he has not established himself as either an offensive defenceman or a punishing defenceman. No. 9-ranked William Nylander, the Canadian-born, Swedish-trained winger, may be the most skilled player in the entire draft class, but scouts worry about a stubborn streak that has often seen him play a more individual than team game. No. 10-ranked Nikolaj Ehlers, the Halifax Mooseheads Danish winger, was as prolific as any prospect this year, scoring 49 goals and 104 points in 67 games, and theres no doubting his skill level, but hes listed at 160 pounds, or as one scout put it, &"he has to put on 20 pounds to be considered small.dddddddddddd" "Its a funny draft," a scout said. "A kid like Ritchie, with his size and skill, or Nylander, with his skill level, could one day be the best of this class but theres some real risk associated with these guys. What if Ritchie doesnt get fully committed to being as good as he can be? What if Nylander just decides hes going to play like hes the only guy on the ice?" Thats always a theme in any draft, but this year it seems to be even more prevalent earlier than ever involving more prospects than usual. Size is certainly on the mind of a lot of teams, especially after the very large Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup. Whether anyone likes it or not, thats the standard by which players are now judged. "I look at these kids and I try to project them playing against the Los Angeles Kings one day," a scout said. "Can they play that game at that level?" Even that exercise can be fraught with peril because two of those outstanding Kings – Tanner Pearson, who went 30th overall in the 2012 draft, and Tyler Toffoli, who went 47th overall in 2010 – were passed over by many teams in their respective draft year because they were perceived as too slow or too weak or too incomplete or too flawed. Go figure. Guelph centre Robby Fabbri (No. 14 on TSNs list) scored 45 goals for the Storm in the regular season, was the OHLs playoff MVP and plays a hard-nosed game for a 5-foot-10 pivot, but will he stand up to the L.A. King litmus test? Ditto for smallish Swiss forward Kevin Fiala, No. 15 on the TSN list, though Fiala had the benefit of playing against men in both the Swedish League and for Switzerland at the World Championships. But no two players represent the uncertain quality of this years draft like the 30th and 31st-ranked Josh Ho Sang of the Windsor Spitfires and Anthony DeAngelo of the Sarnia Sting. Ho Sang is an electrifying, highly-skilled albeit undersized skilled forward who has some very firm ideas on how the game of hockey should be played and how he should play it. First-round talent? Absolutely. Will a team step up and take him in the first round? Thats the fascinating aspect of this draft. So much natural talent; so many question marks. "The question with Ho Sang is whether he wants to be a hockey player or he wants to be an artist or an entertainer," one scout said. "When he plays the give and go game, hes effective and dangerous but a lot of the time he only wants to go, theres no give (the puck to anyone else). Is he going to figure it out? Because if he does, the skills he has…" DeAngelos situation, though, takes it to another level of uncertainty. The American blueliner is undersized at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, but he put up 15 goals and 71 points in 51 games for Sarnia. Imagine how many more points he would have registered if he hadnt been suspended on three separate occasions this season for either violating the OHLs diversity policy or verbally abusing an on-ice official or, as fate would have it, both. In December of 2013, DeAngelo was suspended five games for violating the leagues diversity policy in a verbal spat with an on-ice official. In January of 2014, he received an eight-game suspension for violating the leagues diversity policy in a verbal exchange with a teammate. Five games after returning from that eight-game suspension, he was suspended two games for (verbal) abuse of an official. Many scouts dont know what to make of DeAngelo. The vast majority of them say the north New Jersey kid, wholl effectively be at "home" for this weeks NHL draft in Philadelphia, is (in spite of size concerns) a first-round talent, a smart, mobile and offensively gifted blueliner. "Look at the talented small defencemen and where theyve been taken in the draft, guys like Ryan Ellis, Ryan Murphy, Derrick Pouliot, even Erik Karlsson," a scout said. "DeAngelo should, on talent, be taken in that 10 to 20 range but Im not sure he will be because of the other stuff." Some of the scouts surveyed by TSN said they wouldnt take DeAngelo at all. Others said he would be a consideration in the second round – talent like that is hard to pass – but a couple did say they wouldnt rule out considering him in the first round. "If you read stuff that people write, I think they go overboard with it because they dont know the details," DeAngelo told the Camden Courier Post. "They think I have character issues. I dont think I have character issues." Interestingly, USA Hockey chose to not invite DeAngelo to its summer evaluation camp for the 2015 U.S. national junior team. Of all the stories in what is expected to be an unpredictable draft, DeAngelos is bound to be one of the most compelling. Hes expected to have upwards of 100 friends and family in attendance Friday night and whether hes chosen or not in the first round will be an intriguing storyline. Getting consensus for the TSN rankings was never more difficult than this year. Outside of perhaps the top 35 to 40, there was no real consensus. Even within the top 30 in the first round, there was a far greater variance from player to player than ever before. TSNs rankings do not take into account the teams order of selection; theres no allowance made for a teams personal or positional preference. These rankings are not so much an evaluation of which players will one day turn into the best NHLers as it is a forecast of what order in the draft this Friday and Saturday these players will reasonably be chosen. Stephen Curry had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Klay Thompson added 21 points and the Warriors defeated the Houston Rockets 105-93 on Wednesday night, upping their streak to 14 games. Golden State outscored Houston 32-17 in the fourth, holding the Rockets to just 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from the floor in the period. The last six or seven minutes we had tremendous effort from everyone on the floor, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. Thats the feeling that eight Canadian Football League teams are experiencing right now in advance of the expansion draft to stock the Ottawa Redblacks. Each team will lose three players in the process, with each club knowing it will in all probability lose at least one player of substance. Good news for the Redblacks, bad news for the club teams. (draft rules explained at end of article) For the Toronto Argonauts, general manager Jim Barker has been preparing for this event since it was announced the league would return to the nations capital. The process to come up with a protection list hasnt been easy. "It will be interesting to see what Ottawa chooses to do, whether they choose to take some older guys," Barker told TSN 1050. "For us, that factors in to who we decide to protect. We dont know what Ottawas plan is. Will they decide to take a guy who maybe only has a year or two left (in his career), or are they going to take the younger players and try to build it for more of a long-term thing? We dont know what their philosophy is and we wont until they actually draft the players." Theres the rub. The Argos wont know what the Redblacks plan is until its too late. So teams around the league can try to project what Ottawas strategy will be, but Barker says the Argonauts wont be playing that guessing game. "We cant really do it that way," said the GM. "What well do is protect the players we feel are most likely able to help us long term. We try to take all the scenarios." As an example, the Argos wont likely be able to protect both Jeff Keeping and Joe Eppele. Keeping, a finalist for the leagues Outstanding Offensive Lineman this season, is a 31-year old with nine seasons under his belt. Eppele, the second-overall draft pick in the 2010 draft, is five years younger than Keeping, and has far fewer city miles on his bodys odometer. Barker says the choice comes down to trying to replace whichever player the Redblacks snap up. "If we protect Joe and expose Keeping," reacted Barker to the hypothetical scenario, "If they take Keeping how would we replace him? If we went the other way and they took Eppele how would we replace him? We have players in our pipeline who are not eligible to them. We have Matt Sewell (OT at McMaster) who we drafted in the first round last year, we have (first-overall pick in 2010, LB) Cory Greenwood who has been hurt all year with Detroit (NFL), and we have Natey Adjei (3rd round 2013), who broke his leg at the University of Buffalo and didnt get to play much this year, but hes a guy that we think has a lot of ability as a wide receiver, so those things all factor into it too. When Sewell went back to school it was a good thing for us in terms of (the draft) because hes not eligible." While fans will see some of the bigger names on the import lists, the key to Ottawas success will be what happens in the non-import draft. "The bbiggest thing is that you have to do is try not to lose too much depth," said Barker.dddddddddddd "You can change the ratio when you have depth, if you dont, its difficult to do that." "The six non-import protections are the most vital," continued the GM. "Theyre the hardest to replace, theyre what you take the longest time to build. When teams are struggling normally its because the Canadian talent base is depleted. When you look at teams that are struggling thats normally the situation." Another difficult decision comes at the safety position. Matt Black is a five-year veteran who started at safety for the first time this year, while Jermaine Gabriel was the Argos second-round pick in 2013 and at some point will start. Who do the Argo protect in this case? "You hate to lose young players and both of these guys are guys who just started to do well," said Barker. "Matt Black has been in the league for a while and has been a great special teams player. Jermaine Gabriel this year was one of the best ST players in the league. Hes what you look for in a safety, hes very physical, this is his natural position. "Matt is more of a corner that moved in to play free safety. Hes a very savvy player. If youre Ottawa and you want to win right now, you prefer that we expose Matt Black. If youre building for the future you hope we expose Jermaine Gabriel. Can you protect both of them? Its very difficult." The selection process is not an easy one. So how do they decide who is on the list. "Well have some heated debates between Scott (head coach Milanovich) and myself and the coaching staff in terms of who it is on the final list," Barker admitted. "The first five are pretty easy, the sixth Canadian is very difficult to pick. With the Americans the first 7 are pretty easy the last three are very difficult." Whether it comes to consensus, pulling rank, or a good old game of rock, paper, scissors, the Argos will submit a protection list to the CFL. Then the waiting game begins before we find out which players the Redblacks receive as early Christmas presents. Draft rules: The first stage of the event is the import draft. Each team will protect ten players, including no more than one quarterback, then the Redblacks begin the poaching process. Each current team will then have one player selected from the available imports, with Ottawa being able to take up to two QBs. Then its over to the non-import draft. Each team protects six non-imports. If the Redblacks picked one of their quarterbacks in the import draft, then they get to protect eight non-imports. If Ottawa took a kicker or punter, the current team can protect seven non-imports. After the first round of the non-import draft is over, the current teams can protect six more non-imports (unless the team lost a QB or a kicker, then it can protect eight more) before the Redblacks choose another non-import. So at the end of the draft the Redblacks will have 24 new players, 16 of whom are non-imports. ' ' '
METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints included 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, veteran receiver Robert Meachem and both kickers among their final preseason roster cuts Saturday. Receiver Nick Toon was among several young, relatively unproven players who survived the last round of cuts before the Saints begin preparations for their Sept. 7 regular-season opener at Atlanta. Others still with the club include undrafted rookie cornerback Brian Dixon; linebackers Kyle Knox and Kasim Edebali; and offensive lineman Senio Kelemete. New Orleans also held onto to veteran defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick. The Saints brought in Bailey after he was released by Denver and general manager Mickey Loomis said after the move that Bailey was expected to compete for a starting cornerback job. However, Bailey struggled with a foot injury and saw limited action in only the final two preseason games. Meanwhile, Patrick Robinson, a 2010 first-round draft choice, came back strong from a knee injury and apparently won the job. The younger cornerbacks the Saints kept over the more accomplished 36-year-old Bailey have been healthier and also contribute on special teams. The Saints did not immediately indicate what their intentions were at kicker after their decision to cut both veteran Shayne Graham and rookie Derek Dimke, but they could have in mind one of a number of proven kickers cut by other clubs. Veteran kicker Ryan Succop, for example, was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday after being beaten out by rookie Cairo Santos, a former Lou Groza Award winner from Tulane. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals recently cut veteran kicker Jay Feely. The Saints also could choose to bring back either of the kickers they had throughout camp after theyve had an opportunity to review all of the new candidates for that position. When they find a kicker, theyll have to either cut another player or put one on injured reserve. Saints players still on the roster whove been struggling with injuries during the past few weeks of the preseason include fullback Erik Lorig and linebacker Khairi Fortt. For now, the Saints have chosen to keep three quarterbacks, giving them the option of going with either veteran Luke McCown or second-year pro Ryan Griffin in the event they need to relieve star quarterback Drew Brees. McCown also has gotten the majority of work as the holder on field goals. The Saints had to trim 22 players from the roster between Thursday nights preseason finale and Saturday afternoons deadline to get down to the 53-player regular-season limit. Included among final cuts were: receivers Brandon Coleman, Seantavious Jones and Charles Hawkins; cornerbacks Terrence Frederick, Trevin Wade and Derrius Brooks; running back Derrick Strozier, linebackers Keyunta Dawson and Todd Davis; fullback Greg Jones; tight end Nic Jacobs; defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil; and offensive linemen Jason Weaver, Marcel Jones, Tavon Rooks, Thomas Welch and Matt Armstrong. A number of the younger players cut by New Orleans could be eligible to be brought back on the clubs practice squad as early as Sunday. He did not directly answer when asked to respond to those who say the foundation is a way of throwing money at the problem to placate critics. The Oneida Indian Nation, which has been at the forefront of the push to change the teams name, said Snyder is the one who needs to come to grips with reality. VANCOUVER - Theyll share the sidelines at B.C. Place as opponents Sunday, but Grey Cup head coaches Kent Austin and John Hufnagel have a CFL history together.Austin began his CFL career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1987, when Hufnagel was a player-coach with the club. Austin went on to play 10 seasons with the Riders, B.C. Lions, Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, winning two Grey Cups (89 with Riders, 94 with Lions) and passing for over 36,000 yards.But on Wednesday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach and general manager credited Hufnagel, the head coach/GM of the Calgary Stampeders, with helping him make a seamless transition to the three-down game following his collegiate career at Ole Miss.Ive got a lot of respect for John, Austin said. He won his first start, had a terrific football game.Hufnagel and Austin followed similar paths to their current positions.Both played at major U.S. colleges (Hufnagel starred at Penn State) and spent time in the NFL before coming to Canada. After winning Grey Cups as players, Hufnagel and Austin began their coaching careers in the CFL, then headed to the U.S. before returning north of the border to head up their respective franchises football operations departments.After serving as an assistant with Saskatchewan (88) and Calgary (90-96), Hufnagel took over as head coach/GM of the Arena Football Leagues New Jersey Red Dogs. After winning a Grey Cup he returned to Ole Miss as the offensive co-ordinator and then spent three seasons as Cornells head coach before returning north with Hamilton in 2013.Austin and Hufnagel are the only ones in the CFL with the dual coach/GM titles, with Austin also being Hamiltons director of football operations.Im not sure its an advantage, its a little bit more single-minded as far as the direction you want to take, Hufnagel said. And everybody thats working for you has that single direction.Its a lot easier to get things you want as far as the grocery list. And so I enjoy it. Its a unique position, and I relish the job that I have in Calgary.Austin agreed.I would just reiterate what John said, he said. I mean, it gives you the ability to choose your team and to piece the puzzle together the way that you and your staff believe is the best....At the end of the day, if you can make the decision to build your team, then the buck really falls with us to put together a team that has a chance.Hufnagel has certainly put Calgary in position to win since his return, amassing an impressive 89-36-1 regular-season record. But some football pundits point to Calgarys 6-5 playoff record and just one Grey Cup title over that span.
