"We feel he is going to be an important piece of our organizations success in the future and look forward to watching him develop as a player." The Leafs hope to avoid a fifth consecutive loss since their victory in the Winter Classic as they play host on Sunday night to the New Jersey Devils. Since beating the Detroit Red Wings outdoors on Jan. 1, Toronto has been outscored 21-7 over its longest skid since dropping a season-high five in a row from Nov. 25-Dec. 3. After losing by a five-goal margin at Carolina on Thursday, the Maple Leafs were more competitive in a 3-2 setback to the hosting Washington Capitals the following night. Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk each posted a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Jonathan Bernier gave up all three goals on 35 shots. "We had some unlucky bounces tonight and thats the way it goes for us," said Bernier. "I thought we all played really hard out there tonight and had a good game, just came up short." Bernier, who beat the Red Wings in the Winter Classic, has yielded 12 goals in three straight setbacks, while fellow netminder James Reimer has yielded 11 goals in his past three appearances, including two starts. Reimer is 4-1-2 with a 2.04 goals against average in seven career starts versus the Devils, while Bernier is 1-1-0 with a 1.92 GAA in two meetings. He got the start in the first of three encounters this season, posting 34 saves in a 2-1 shootout win at home over New Jersey on Nov. 8. Bernier is expected to get the call between the pipes this evening. Kessel tallied in regulation and van Riemsdyk had the shootout winner, giving the Maple Leafs their fifth victory in a row over the Devils..dddddddddddd. That includes three straight as the host. Toronto is 6-0-2 in its past eight over New Jersey overall. Michael Ryder had a goal and Cory Schneider made 27 saves in the most recent setback to the Leafs. Ryder scored for a fourth game in a row on Saturday night in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Florida Panthers, while the biggest goal of the game went to Marek Zidlicky. The defensemans eighth tally of the campaign came with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock and gave New Jersey a 2-0-1 mark on its three-game homestand. With just seconds left on the clock, Travis Zajac won an offensive draw back to Jaromir Jagr, who then quickly sent a pass that Zidlicky one-timed into the upper right corner of the net. "I can tell you we draw up a thousand faceoff plays over the course of a season and they very rarely work," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer. "You either lose a draw or you dont get a bounce. The credit was to the execution. Zajac, Jagr and Zid and (Steve) Bernier did a great job." Jagrs assist on the play gave him 1,724 career points, moving him pass Hall of Famer and former teammate Mario Lemieux for sole possession of seventh place on the NHLs all-time list. Schneider, fresh off a 26-save shutout of Dallas on Thursday, turned back 29 shots to help New Jersey prevail. He is expected to get a third straight start tonight when the Devils begin a four-game road trip. Schneider, who will face the Maple Leafs for just the second time in his career, would make three straight starts for the second time this season. He is 7-9-5 with a 1.97 GAA, .921 save percentage and three shutouts in 21 starts this season. ' ' '
LONDON -- England secured its place in a three-way fight for the Six Nations title next weekend by blowing away Wales in a 29-18 win at Twickenham on Sunday, delivering a potent mix of clinical finishing, flawless place-kicking and non-stop intensity to capture the Triple Crown. Welsh hopes of landing an unprecedented third straight championship outright were ended thanks to first-half tries by Danny Care and Luther Burrell and seven successful kicks - five penalties and two conversions from flyhalf Owen Farrell. England banished the painful memories of a 30-3 loss to Wales in last seasons Six Nations title decider by dominating almost every facet of a game played at a searing pace. The visitors scrum was demolished, their tackling and handling was sloppy and they only stayed in contention because of fullback Leigh Halfpennys own blemish-free record of six penalties. "Weve tried to remove the fear of playing, and when youve got the courage of your convictions, it generally pays off," England coach Stuart Lancaster said. "Its nice to put last years result in Cardiff to bed. We lost fair and square on that day, but today was our day." England joined France and Ireland on six points from four matches, setting up a thrilling last round of matches. Owning a far superior points difference of +81, Ireland will win the title - and seal a perfect international sendoff for retiring centre Brian ODriscoll with a victory over the French in Paris in the last of the three games. England simply has to beat Italy in Rome, which should be a given on this performance, and hope Ireland lose. If that happens, Lancasters side should lift the trophy for only the second time since winning the World Cup in 2003. The English just keep raising the bar under Lancaster, who has changed the teams mentality and approach in his two years in charge. He claimed that the toughed-out 13-10 win over Ireland two weeks ago was the highlight of a reign that includes a record victory over New Zealand, but this success will take some beating. It clinched the Triple Crown - a sweep of wins over the home unions for the first time since 2003 and was the perfect answer to a midweek taunt from Wales coach Warren Gatland - who challenged whether the English had turned from boys to men in the last 12 months. This Wales side contained 12 players that featured in the British Lions series-clinching win in the third test against Australia last July. Wales had more than double the amount of caps as England here. "We didnt keep the ball well enough today, there were too many turnovers and we were hammered at the scrum very disappointing," Gatland said. A bad day for the Welsh became even worse with the news that Halfpenny will miss the rest of this season after dislocating his right shoulder toward the end of the match. On a red-hot day in southwest London, England brought a scorching intensity that the Welsh couldnt live with. At scrumhalf, Care was the conductor-in-chief and from one of his trademark quick taps, England went in front after just five minutes. Care noticed Wales defenders had turned their backs after referee Romain Poite awarded a penalty following a long advantage, and Care darted past Poite and into a gap to dive over the line. It was Englands first try against Wales in 282 minutes. Wales often had no answer to its opponents line breaks and hard running, but with the adrenalin flowing England gave away some soft penalties at the fiercely contested breakdown that Halfpenny punished in the ninth, 23rd and 31st minutes. Two of those came from near halfway. With Farrell booting two penalties of his own, England held a 13-9 lead just after the half hour but that lead turned to 11 points when Wales over-threw a lineout and the ball was recycled out to the English left wing, where Jonny May cut inside. Play was set up for Billy Twelvetrees to slither a grubber kick into the left corner where Burrell collected on the dive for a try, converted from out wide. England was much the better side yet two more well-struck penalties by Halfpenny in the final three minutes saw Wales somehow jog back to the dressing rooms just five points behind. However, Welsh errors - both handling and tactical, continued after halftime and Farrell was unforgiving from the kicking tee. England was never in danger of blowing its lead. "We grew a lot as a team over the last year," England lock Courtney Lawes said, "and a performance like that has been a long time coming." Its the longest the 10-year pro has ever been sidelined. Welker missed the Broncos last 3 1/2 games after sustaining his second concussion in a four-week span just before halftime in a game against Tennessee on Dec. 8. The Broncos sorely missed him four days later in a 27-20 loss to San Diego, when they were just 2 for 9 on third down and suffered their only home loss of the season. Denver (13-3) hosts the Chargers (10-7) Sunday in the AFC Divisional round. "One of the first times Ive been out of the game on the sidelines, so Im very anxious to get back," said Welker, who was cleared last week during the bye and quickly regained his rhythm with Peyton Manning. "Yeah, when youve played as long as I have it comes back pretty quick. I really wasnt too worried about that," Welker said. He also said hes not going to fret about the possibility of another head injury when he lines up in the slot Sunday. "I dont worry about the concussions or anything like that. I just focus on my assignment, my technique aand go out there and play the best I can," he said.dddddddddddd Welker caught a career-high 10 TD passes in his first season with Manning after spending his last six seasons catching passes from Tom Brady in New England. He was on pace for his sixth career 100-catch season before being sidelined and finished with 73 catches for 778 yards. Welker was one of the several free agents the Broncos signed last winter in the wake of their devastating 38-35 double-overtime loss to Baltimore in the playoffs last year. "I suffered disappointment, too, last year," said Welker, whose Patriots were beaten by the Ravens 28-13 in the AFC championship a week later. "Im just as hungry as everybody else and want to get out there and play my best." With 15-25 mph winds expected, Denvers downfield passing attack to Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker might be curtailed against the Chargers, which could put an even bigger emphasis on Welkers routes. "I dont know if its going to be windy enough to affect the passing game or not but you just have to focus in and be ready," Welker said. "I think it will affect the kicking game more than anything if it is windy." ' ' '
(SportsNetwork.com) - Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton reportedly has two partially torn knee ligaments that will likely sideline him until the playoffs. ESPN cited sources Sunday as saying Stanton has partially torn ACL and MCL ligaments. Stanton was hurt during Thursdays game against St. Louis. Reports on Friday said Stanton had a pair of sprained knee ligaments and the team had considered him day-to-day. Partially torn ligaments would likely keep Stanton sidelined for about 3-to-4 weeks. If the 11-3 Cardinals can earn a first-round bye in the playoffs, they would not play a postseason game until the weekend of Jan. 10-11, which would be four weeks away. The Cardinals currently lead the NFC West with games remaining against Seattle and San Francisco. Stanton was starting in place of the injured Carson Palmer, who is out for the season with a torn knee ligament suffered in early November. Ryan Lindley took over for Stanton against the Rams. Lindley and Logan Thomas are currently the remaining healthy quarterbacks on the Cardinals roster. Fake Jerseys For Sale . Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Dustin Tokarski, Montreal Canadiens (5) – He stole the game for the Habs tonight. He was outstanding early on when the Rangers pressed in the first period with big saves on St.Louis and Hagelin that could have put it out of reach. His positioning was interesting as he used different depths for himself. Not being a big guy, you would think he would be more aggressive, but he was surprisingly patient and deep on Zuccarello in the third, a sign of confidence. He made a massive save on St.Louis in the final minute. Both goals were not his fault as they hit players in front of him. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) – He wasnt tested as much tonight, especially early on, and made big saves on Pacioretty and Desharnais to keep it 1-0. Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentuckys next big test was supposed to come this weekend against a national powerhouse, not during a midweek game against an Ivy League school missing its best player. But there were John Caliparis top-ranked Wildcats, yet to score a point after five minutes against Columbia. There they were, trailing at halftime. And there they were, after 26 minutes, still yet to hold a lead. Aaron Harrison scored 14 points and Kentucky finally pulled away in the last 10 1/2 minutes on Wednesday night to avoid what would have been a crushing upset ahead of Saturdays game against No. 21 North Carolina. The Wildcats beat the Lions 56-46 in the first meeting between the teams since the 1966 NCAA tournament. They trailed 11-0 in the first half, 25-23 at halftime and didnt take their first lead until there was 13:18 left in the game. The 10-point win was Kentuckys smallest margin of victory this season, but it wasnt the first time the Wildcats (10-0) underperformed against a seemingly inferior foe. They shook off a 38-33 deficit to Buffalo on Nov. 16 and beat the Bulls 71-52, then went on to rout Kansas by 32 points two days later. Willie Cauley-Stein had 10 points and 10 rebounds against Columbia, most of it in the second half, but no other Wildcats player scored in double digits. Maodo Lo scored 16 to lead Columbia (5-3), hitting several key 3-pointers in the first half. It was Columbias first game against a top-ranked team since losing to Indiana at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 26, 1975. The last Lions victory over a ranked opponent technically came in 1994 after No. 14 Cal was forced to forfeit a game over an ineligible player. But Columbia hasnt beaten a ranked opponent on the scoreboard since topping No. 19 Rutgers on Dec. 2, 1976. More recently, the Lions lost on the road to a No. 2-ranked Michigan State 63-52 on Nov. 15 last season. Their first-ever game at Rupp Arena started with an improbable 11-0 run as the Wildcats, who had trailed for just 36 minutes all season, missed their first seven shots and the Lions made four of their first six. Calipari subbed out his five starters 2 1/2 into the game and Harrison, after checking back in, ended the field goal drought with a layup just over five minutes into the game. Later, a 7-0 Kentucky run was stopped by Los 3-pointer, which gave the Lions a 20-14 lead. Columbia made its run against the top-ranked Wildcats despite playing without star forward Alex Rosenberg, who led the Lions in scoring last season but withdrew from school last month because of a broken foot in order to protect his fourth year of eligibility in the Ivy League. Lo made Columbias fifth 3-pointer of the first half from the left corner with under a minute to play. The Lions didnt trail until Derek Willis free throws gave Kentucky a 36-34 lead. The Wildcats didnt begin pulling away until a 6-0 run capped by Cauley- Steins alley-oop dunk off a pass from Andrew Harrison made it 44-37 with 10 minutes left. Kentuckys lead reached 15 after that. It ended the game shooting under 37 percent, including 2-for 17 on 3-pointers. Game Notes Kentucky continued its best start since going 19-0 to begin the 2009-10 season ... Stopchargingmaria pulled away from Vero Amore in a two-horse stretch duel to win the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes by a neck Friday. It was the fourth Black-Eyed Susan win for trainer Todd Pletcher, who also won this Grade 2 race for 3-year-old fillies in 2005, 2007 and 2012. Stopchargingmaria won three of five races last year and finished in the money each outing. This year, however, she plodded to fifth in the Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park before taking fifth in the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn. Any concern Pletcher had about his horse dissipated with her dramatic victory at Pimlico. "This was certainly her best race," Pletcher said. "To be honest, Im not really sure why her first two races this year didnt go as well as last year. Today she acted like her old self." Stopchargingmaria, the 7-2 favourite, sat back behind pace-setter Image of Anna and angled four wide near the backstretch before driving to the finish under jockey Javier Castellano. "It set up perfectly for us and I had a beautiful trip," Castellano said. "We figured there would be a lot of speed and I just wanted her to be in good position. At the top of the stretch, I was pretty confident." Stopchargingmaria is named for owner Mike Repoles wife, Maria, who he jokingly says likes to shoop a lot.dddddddddddd The filly paid $9.60, $5.60 and $4. Pletcher didnt stop there. Later Friday, he saddled Revolutionary, who captured the Grade 3 Pimlico Special -- the fifth win in 11 career races for the 4-year-old dark brown colt. Vero Amore ran second early behind Image of Anna and took the lead for the first time in the stretch. But she was no match for Stopchargingmaria. "I thought we were going to keep on going, then the horse came alongside of me and we just got beat," jockey Frank Pennington said. "She gave me everything I could." Trained by Robert Reid Jr., Vero Amore was coming off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes. "I cant believe she still is not a stakes winner," Reid said. "What she lacks in size and maybe pedigree, she makes up in trying." Vero Amore paid $12.80 and $9.40, and third-place finisher Fortune Pearl returned $5.80. "I was pleased with her race," trainer Graham Notion said. "She won very impressively last time (May 2 at Pimlico) and she showed today that it wasnt a fluke." The winning time was 1:51.79 over 1 1/8 miles on a good track. Heavy rain pelted the area in the early hours, but sunshine peeked through the clouds at the start of the race. Joint Return, trained by John Servis, took fourth. Arethusa, with Rosie Napravnik aboard, came in sixth and Image of Anna faded to last. ' ' '
LOS ANGELES -- Although his San Antonio Spurs have the NBAs best record and the longest active winning streak after four weeks of unbeaten basketball, coach Gregg Popovich can always find areas of imperfection. The Spurs defensive performance against the woeful Los Angeles Lakers made it easy this time. Tony Parker scored 25 points, Kawhi Leonard added 22 points and 10 rebounds, and the Spurs beat the Lakers 125-109 Wednesday night for their 11th consecutive victory. Danny Green scored 16 points and Tim Duncan had 12 points and 16 rebounds for the NBA-leading Spurs, who havent lost since Feb. 21 while winning 14 of 15. San Antonio managed to hold off a decent challenge from the Lakers with strong shooting down the stretch and 14 second-half points from Leonard, but Popovich wasnt overly impressed. "Probably the only thing I liked is that they hung in there," Popovich said. "I thought we played really porous defence. I thought a lot of that was because L.A. was very aggressive. They were in attack mode, and I dont think we adjusted to it until maybe the end of the third quarter. From that point, I thought our defence was very good." Green and Manu Ginobili hit three 3-pointers apiece for the Spurs, who opened a three-game California road trip by calmly matching their longest winning streak of the season. Parker took charge after halftime, scoring eight points in the third quarter and catalyzing San Antonios offence in the fourth. "We have to give a lot of credit to the Lakers," Parker said. "It took a lot of energy for us to win. We have to play better." With their seventh straight victory over the Lakers dating to last seasons playoffs, the Spurs opened a 1 1/2-game lead over Indiana for the leagues best record. San Antonio leads Oklahoma City by two games atop the Western Conference. "The Spurs are a fine-tuned machine," said Lakers centre Robert Sacre, who had a career-high 11 rebounds. "They have all the pieces to make it work, and if one guy goes down, they have someone to fill that spot." Xavier Henry scored 24 points and Pau Gasol had 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the Lakers sixth loss in seven games. A few hours after longtime Lakers coach Phil Jackson got a standing ovation across the continent at his first game at the New York Knicks top basketball boss, his fiancee, Lakers executive Jeanie Buss, watched Los Angeles stumble to its 20th loss in 26 games. "It was a tough way to go out, but we fought," Henry said. "You could tell from the jump that we really wanted it. About six minutes in, the guys really pushed the tempo and really gave them a run." Kent Bazemore scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers for the Lakers, who hadnt played since their 34-point loss at San Antonio five days earlier. That win was the biggest in this long-standing rivalry for the Spurs, who have followed up last springs four-game playoff sweep of Los Angeles with three straight wins this season. "In the last game, the effort wasnt there and the toughness wasnt there, and we got beat by a lot," Lakers forward Ryan Kelly said. "We realized we cant play that way, and tonight was different. We have to build off this and play like this all the time so that we put ourselves in a position to win some games." Green hit five of the Spurs 13 3-pointers in last weeks blowout, but the Lakers largely kept up with powerful San Antonio in the rematch. Los Angeles led for stretches of the third quarter before San Antonio scored 18 points in roughly 3 1/2 minutes with big baskets from Parker and Leonard. The Lakers yielded 100 points for the 12th consecutive game and gave up 110 for the seventh straight game. Los Angeles is the Western Conferences worst defensive team. SAN ANTONIO -- "Beat the Heat!" had a whole new meaning in a sweltering start to the NBA Finals. The San Antonio Spurs handled the conditions, and the team, and it sure helped when a suffering LeBron James couldnt make it to the finish. Tim Duncan had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the Spurs beat the Heat 110-95 on Thursday night in Game 1 at steamy AT&T Center. With an air conditioning failure making it feel like a sauna and causing James to battle cramps that knocked him out of the decisive stretch, the Spurs pulled away to win the opener of the first finals rematch since 1998. "After I came out of the game, they kind of took off," James said. "And it was frustrating sitting out and not be able to help our team." Manu Ginobili had 16 points and 11 assists, Tony Parker added 19 points and eight assists and the Spurs -- 6 for 6 in NBA Finals Game 1s -- shot 59 per cent. "Just very proud of my team," Parker said. "We kept believing, kept pushing. We know its not easy." They host Game 2 on Sunday -- likely in cooler conditions. James finished with 25 points but played only 33 minutes, and Miami was outscored 36-17 in the fourth quarter. "It sucks not being out there for your team, especially at this point in the season," James said. Dwyane Wade had 19 points and Chris Bosh added 18, but the Heat wilted in temperatures that soared to 90 degrees in the second half. "It was tough on both teams," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They were pretty dead. We tried to get guys in and out. ... It was really hot out there." James, who had cramping issues two years ago in the finals, had to ask for a break in the fourth quarter and was getting treatment during a 15-4 Spurs run that turned around the game. James came back in and made a basket that cut it to two points with about 4 minutes left, but couldnt even run back on defence, promptly putting his hand up and lingering at the baseline until help arrived to take him off for good. "I think it felt like a punch in the gut when you see your leader limping like that back to the bench," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Danny Green followed with 3-pointer to trigger what became a 16-3 run to end the game. "You could see the heat was getting to a lot of guys. If I played as many minutes as he did, Id probably be cramping up, too," said Green, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter. The ccrowd chanted "Beat the Heat! Beat the Heat!" late in the game, which was just what the fans themselves were trying to do.dddddddddddd The Spurs said an electrical failure for the power that runs the air conditioning system had occurred. They apologized for the inconvenience but also seemed to poke fun of it, playing songs with "hot" in the lyrics over the sound system. Fans were trying to cool themselves on the hot night, a reminder of what it was like in the old Boston Garden when the Celtics and Lakers got together. The Heat are the first team since those Celtics of 1984-87 to get to four straight finals. They are well-rested after a relatively easy roll through the Eastern Conference playoffs, a key to keeping Wade healthy entering the finals. James was the MVP of the series last year when the Heat rallied from five points down in the final half-minute of regulation to win Game 6 in overtime, then won a Game 7 that was close the whole way for their second straight championship. A rematch was widely anticipated and was close almost throughout. The Heat led 86-79 after Boshs four-point play with 9:38 remaining in the game, but it was all San Antonio from there, and Wade said there were problems even beyond James absence. "Obviously, tonight we wouldve loved to have him in there to finish the game, but weve got to finish the game better," Wade said. The Spurs ended up extending their NBA-record streak to eight straight home playoff wins by 15 or more points. Their roster is filled with international players, such as Parker and Ginobili, who both said they were used to playing without air conditioning overseas. Bosh, scoreless in Game 7 last year, scored Miamis first five points in the Heats 7-2 start. But Ginobili came off the bench firing, making consecutive 3-pointers for an 18-13 lead. Wade and James combined for six straight points before Ginobili made another 3, and Patty Mills added one to close the first-quarter scoring and give the Spurs a 26-20 advantage. The Spurs committed nine turnovers while managing only 20 points in the third quarter, and Miami led 78-74 heading to the fourth. Notes: James joined Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as the only players with 4,000 points and 1,000 assists in the post-season. ... Ray Allen moved past Bryant and Derek Fisher into second place on the career list with 49 3-pointers in the NBA Finals. Robert Horry, a former Spurs forward, is the leader with 56. ' ' '
WASHINGTON -- Ian Desmond keyed a 15-hit attack with a three-run homer, Stephen Strasburg pitched six solid innings and the Washington Nationals defeated the Texas Rangers 9-2 on Friday night. Jayson Werth and Denard Span had three hits each for Washington, which had lost 6 of 7. Previously slumping, Washingtons offence has 14 runs and 30 hits in its last two games. Strasburg (4-4) allowed two unearned runs, though his error led to them, and six hits. He struck out nine and walked one. It was the eighth straight start in which Strasburg has pitched at least six innings and allowed three runs or less. He improved his ERA to a season-low 3.15. Adrian Beltre had three hits for Texas, which fell to 6-3 on its 11-game road trip. Rangers starter Colby Lewis (4-4) allowed six runs, five earned, and nine hits in taking his first road loss. Strasburg had thrown 88 pitches when manager Matt Williams lifted him in the sixth for a pinch-hitter with two outs and two on. The moved paid off when Tyler Moores double to left scored both runners, increasing Washingtons lead to 6-2. The Nationals added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Washington trailed 2-0 in the fourth when Werth and Adam LaRoche singled with one out. Lewis struck out Wilson Ramos, but Desmond sent a 1-0 fastball into the seats in centre field for his 10th home run. Span used his speed to make it 4-2 after he singled in the fifth. Running on the pitch, he kept going around second on Anthony Rendons grounder to third. First baseman Mitch Morelands throw back to the third was wild and Span scored on the error. Texas took the lead during a bizarre second inning. Beltre doubled leading off, but Strasburg stuck out the next two hitters and should have been out of the inning when Leonys Martin hit a slow bouncer to the mound. The ball bounced off Strasburgs glove, then his head, and fell to the ground. He still had a chance to get Martin but missed a stab at the ball. Martin was safe on the error with Beltre moving to third. Strasburg then surrendered RBI singles to the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters, Rougned Odor and Lewis. Lewis hit snapped an 0-for-23 stretch by Rangers pitchers going back to June 20, 2012. ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic have made no secret that the future of their franchise will depend on how well they can develop their young players. Rookie Victor Oladipo is a key cog in that group and provided a glimpse of what team officials hope that future will look like. Arron Afflalo scored 32 points and Oladipo had 30 points, a career-high 14 assists and nine rebounds as the Magic rallied to beat the New York Knicks 129-121 in double overtime on Friday night. The Magic trailed by as many as 14 points, but got 25 points and 10 assists from Oladipo after halftime to stave off the Knicks. Tobias Harris added 22 points. "Every game I control one thing -- my energy that I bring to both ends of the floor," Oladipo said. "Im just trying to do that every game, whether its a good game or a bad game." Orlando snapped a three-game losing streak in its first game following the departure of Glen Davis, who had the remainder of his contract bought out earlier in the day. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said he thought Oladipo played a complete game. The rookie logged a team-high 49 minutes. "He got what he wanted to on both ends of the floor," Vaughn said. "On the offensive end, in a lot of different places we kind of let him go and it was his decision to make." Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 44 points, but only 14 came after the third quarter. The Knicks loss ended their eight-game win streak over the Magic. It was also the latest head-scratching loss for a New York team that has last four of its last five and is yet to post back-to-back wins this month. "Every game right now is important," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "They made the run at the start of the fourth and we couldnt get it back. Its a tough loss." Afflalo found Oladipo for a layup to put the Magic in front 117-113 in the second overtime. But Afflalo injured his right ankle in the process by stepping on Raymond Feltons foot and didnt return. He will be evaluated before the teams upcoming four-game road trip. Orlando was dealt another blow on the Knicks next possession when centre Nik Vucevic was whistled for his sixth foul. Anthony then hit a pair of free-throws to get New York back within a basket. Oladipo answered, getting fouled when he fought past Tim Hardaway Jr. for a layup. He completed the three-point play to push the lead back to 120-115. The Knicks got it back to a point before another three-point play by Oladipo made it 125-121 with 30.7 seconds left. Felton had a 3-pointer rattle out on the other end, forcing the Knicks to foul and Orlando sealed the win at the free throw line. "It is just another game that I feel that we gave away," Anthony said. "We were up and had a comfortable lead. They fought back and never quit." Felton hit back-to-back jumpers to put New York up 113-111 with less than three minutes to play in the first overtime. Oladipo quickly countered on the other end with a driving layup before Felton sprinted ahead and found Tyson Chandler for a reverse slam. But the ball bounced off Chandlers head and popped up and out of the basket. Chandler was called for offensive interference and the basket was waved off. The Magic got the ball, but Afflalos pass was knocked away by Chandler and prompting a Knicks timeout with 41.6 remaining. Anthony briefly got open in the lane, but could only get off a leaning 16-footer that hit the rim and was rebounded by the Magic, who called their own timeout with 8 seconds left. Orlando got up several shots at the rim, but Vucevics final tip attempt fell short. The Knicks led by as many as 14 in the third quarter before the Magic trimmed it to 86-83 in the opening minutes of the fourth. Afflalo sent it to overtime when he hit a step-back jumper with 42.9 seconds left to tie it 106-all. As solid as his performance was, Oladipo said hes not satisfied. "Theres so much room for improvement. I can get so much better," he said. "I really feel like I havent scratched the surface of how good Im going to be. I honestly believe that." DALLAS -- Monta Ellis figures the Dallas Mavericks are better off mentally than the last time they played a Western Conference contender. Armed with three straight wins against losing teams and their best record in almost two years, the Mavericks have to get ready for three games against playoff-worthy foes in the West. Ellis scored 21 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 15 and the Mavericks beat Orlando 107-88 Monday night, extending the Magics longest skid of the season to eight games. The Mavericks bounced back from a blowout loss to defending West champion San Antonio and now get set for a trip to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, less than two weeks after blowing a late lead after Chris Paul left with a shoulder injury that still has him sidelined. "I think our mindset is different heading into this game on a three-game winning streak," said Ellis, who scored 14 in the first half to help build an 18-point lead that withstood a few challenges after halftime. "Hopefully we continue with it." Jameer Nelson scored 21 and Glen Davis added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who got swept on a swing through five Western Conference cities and lost by an average of 20 points. "Im disappointed that it didnt go the way we felt it should have went or could have went, but at the same time we get the opportunity to go home, see our families, sleep in our bed," Nelson said. "You get to play in front of your home fans." The Mavericks (23-16) moved seven games over .500 for the first time since the end of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season -- the year after they won the franchises first championship. Nowitzki did most of his damage in the first half with 10 points, two nights after scoring 20 in the third quarter on his way to a season-high 40 against New Orleans. Vince Carter, who had 17 points, was 3 of 4 from 3-point range and had consecutive 2-point baskets in an 8-0 run that finally put Orlando away in the fourth quarter. The spurt included a long pass from Jae Crowder to Brandan Wright for a dunk that put Dallas up 97-82. Orlando was playing its second straight game without leading scorer Arron Afflalo (strained right foot) and starting centre Nik Vucevic, who was back in Florida after sustaining a concussion at the Clippers in the opener of the long road trip. "This is a team that is depleted because of injuries and stuff, but theyre an NBA team," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "They made a couple of runs at us. We did a good job of getting the lead back up in the game." Jose Calderon scored 13, including a 3 at the shot-clock buzzer that gave the Mavericks their biggest lead of the first half at 58-36. The shot came after Ellis missed badly on a wild layup, but Wayne Ellington grabbed one of his season-high seven rebounds and found Calderon beyond the arc. Nelson played despite injuring a finger in a loss at Denver two nights earlier and had seven assists The veteran guards supporting cast tried to keep the game close early in the second half, with Davis scoring the first six Orlando points after halftime as part of a 21-5 run that got the Magic to 63-57. Davis scored 12 during the run. "I was being more aggressive," Davis said. "I had nothing to lose. I ended up making a nice run and kind of getting the game under control a little bit. They just came back and made another run." Calderon hit another 3-pointer to get the Dallas lead back to 13, and Ellis pulled up from long range with the shot clock running down to finish a 12-0 spurt that put the Mavericks up 75-57. Ellington had a season-high 12 points. NOTES: Mavericks F Shawn Marion sat out again with shoulder and rib injuries, and rookie point guard Shane Larkin was sidelined with a right ankle injury sustained Saturday against the Pelicans. ... The Los Angeles Clippers showed them just how ugly that life could be. Let me explain. The best hockey coaches get fired. Thats how they improve. 18 current NHL coaches have been fired a total of 32 times. Two leading contenders for the Jack Adams Award are Nashvilles Peter Laviolette and Winnipegs Paul Maurice, fired three times each. It seems easy to conclude that they are better at their current jobs for the fact theyve had a few others. LAs Darryl Sutter has won two Stanley Cups after being fired three times. Joel Quenneville has two Stanley Cups in Chicago that followed two less successful stints in Colorado and St. Louis. Claude Julien, Mike Babcock, and Laviolette also celebrated championships with teams that didnt bring them into the NHL. So when you hear that Mike Yeo or Craig Berube might not make it to the end of this season, feel good for them and the nine other coaches who havent yet been fired for the first time--the best is yet to come. -- My thumb is down to the potential that exists for a complete lack of latee-season excitement in the NHLs Eastern Conference, the kind of excitement that comes with a close and hectic playoff race.dddddddddddd With 16 teams in the East as opposed to 14 teams in the West, it figures that more teams will remain alive longer in the larger conference. Obviously not, because If youre hoping for a compelling stretch run in the East, youre basically pinning that hope on…..wait for it… Florida and Toronto. The Panthers are currently four points out of the eighth and last playoff spot, and the Leafs are another three points back, so never mind the idea that things might not be too interesting in early April, the eight playoff teams in the East could be decided well before that. The Western Conference promises to be tighter, especially because the Pacific Division is so bunched behind front-running Anaheim. I know its supposed to matter how the playoff teams line up and what the first-round match ups will be, but the LA Kings two Stanley Cup runs have shown that it really doesnt matter. Making or missing the playoffs does. ' ' '
Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie has re-iterated he will not be applying for any positions with Cricket Australia. Gillespie had been linked with Australias vacant bowling coach role with Craig McDermott having stepped down, as planned, after the World Twenty20 in India in March. The rumour mill stepped up a gear on Sunday when the 41-year-old, who was in the running to become England coach last year, met with Australia coach Darren Lehmann. But Gillespie revealed on Tuesday that his future, at least in the short-term, was with Yorkshire, who he has guided to County Championship Division One success the past two seasons.I thought about it overnight, spoke to him [Darren] yesterday and informed him that Im not going to apply for any role in cricket Australia and now Im back here [with Yorkshire], he told Sky Sports News HQ.There was no role. I want to make that really clear. It was honestly just two mates having a chat and as much as anything it was just a good catch-up.You never rule anything out in professional sport. Things do change and things can change. But at this point in time Im very comfortable. There had been doubt expressed over Gillespies future with Yorkshire, both because of the link with Australia and potential openings with other international teams. But Gillespie is happy with his current position, which sees him spend the majority of the year with Yorkshire and also coach the Adelaide Strikers in the Australian Big Bash League, and that would remain the case for family reasons.Ive got a lot of things I want to achieve here. Ive got a wonderful role with the Adelaide Strikers in Australia at the Big Bash and I do have a young family, he explained. That is something that does play on my mind a bit, and in international cricket you cant escape the fact that theres a lot of travel involved. NEW YORK -- The New York Mets have cut slumping 40-year-old Bobby Abreu and are calling up outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis from the minors. The Mets designated Abreu for assignment after Mondays 4-3 loss to San Francisco. His final appearance came in the sixth inning when he was sent up as a pinch-hitter, then pulled after the Giants made a pitching change. Abreu had been out of the majors since 2012 when the Mets promoted him from Triple-A on April 21. He provided a left-handed bat and good patience at the plate as a pinch-hitter, occasional outfielder and designated hitter for games at American League stadiums. Abreu started well, but quickly dropped off. He was hitless in his last 22 at-bats as a pinch-hitter. He hit .238 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 142 plate appearances, and finished up 0 for 13. Overall, Abreu has hit .291 with 288 homers in 18 seasons with Houston, Philadelphia, the Yankees, the Angels, the Dodgers and the Mets. "It was a big step to be out for one year and come back this year," Abreu said. "The feeling right now, its not going to put me down. Im going to stay with my head up." Abreu said he will play winter ball back home in Venezuela and perhaps look to become a hitting coach in the future. "Id like to see if I can pass all the stuff I know to these guys," he said. Moments after scoring and setting off another wild celebration at Minsk arena, Platt leapt into the arms of Belarusian captain Alexei Kalyuzhny. Not long after, fans were chanting his name. "Its an emotion that Im not sure Ive achieved ever in my career, just because of the atmosphere and the electricity in the building," Platt said. "It just runs through your veins and grabs a hold of you." Along with goaltender Kevin Lalande, Platt is one of two Canadian-born players representing host Belarus at the world hockey championship and playing major roles in what might be the best international showing in the countrys history. Led by Canadian-born coach Glen Hanlon, Belarus is in the quarter-finals for just the third time and the first since 2009. This is the biggest event Belarus has ever hosted, so Minsk has been partying for two weeks. And this team is giving locals another reason to celebrate. "You have to understand the magnitude (of) what this means to them," Hanlon said. "Its bigger than just a game. This is their chance to show everybody." By show everybody, Hanlon means the city, which is decked out in IIHF signs welcoming the world and reminding them in the form of giant bison mascots that hockey is happening here. Inside the 15,000-seat Minsk Arena, home of the KHLs Dynamo Minsk, good hockey has been happening for Belarus. Lalande, a native of Ottawa who plays for Dynamo and gained citizenship, has been stellar and Platt has added timely offence. But the Canadian imports want the credit to go to leading scorers Mikhail Grabovski and Sergei Kostitsyn. "Players are playing for this symbol, and it means a lot more to them to represent their country than probably a National Hockey League team or any club team around the world," Platt said, pointing to the Belarusian coat of arms on his chest. "Youre seeing that with Sergei Kostitsyn, Mikhail Grabovski just really taking their game to a level Im sure theyve almost never played at." Grabovski beamed with pride when talking about what this tournament means to him. Hes showing that to Hanlon, who first coached him as a 21-year-old at the world championships in Vienna in 2005. The Grabovski at this tournament is an other-worldly player. "I dont even look at Mikhail anymore because I know hes going to play great," Hanlon said. "I never get tired of saying, Good game, Mikhail." Hanlon is limited in what he can say to some of his players because of the language barrier. He understands Russian and Belarusian and is trying to learn to speak both languages, even though he doesnt have to. The former Washington Capitals coach and longtime NHL goaltender, whos in his second stint as coach of the Belarusian national team, has someone with him at almost all times who speaks English. At his news conferences with local media, the Brandon, Man., native answers in English, occasionally splicing in Belarusian words and pausing to let the interpreter next to him do his work. "Ive taken lessons, Ive done all of it," Hanlon said. "I have a better handle on it. Ive gone home here after every friendly tournament, so I take all my books, put them in my backpack like the college student on spring break and I end up dealing with my 12-year-old son and my wife and I sort of break away from it for a couple weeks." Hanlons wife and son still live in Vancouver, and because shes a teacher and hes a skier and hockey player they dont accompany him to Europe. "Hed rather play his own hockey than watch me coach," Hanlon said. Everyone in Belarus is watching Hanlon coach with keen interest. In Minsk, televisions all over the city have tournament games on, whether Belarus is playing or not. Inside Minsk Arena, one section is full of fans jumping up and down and doing chants normally reserved for soccer matches. Others whistle and fill the building with the kind of noise Lalande and Platt have no comparison for and Hanlon can only relate to the old Chicago Stadium. "When you go into somewhere like Beell Centre or Madison Square Garden, its pretty loud but it dies off after a while," Hanlon said.dddddddddddd "Here its sustained for the whole 2 1/2 hours of the game. Im not kidding: You cant hear a word down there. Im screaming and Im yelling at my players whos up and everything. "From before the game starts till after its over, its like a festival." Its a festival thats special to the Belarusian players, whether theyre from Novopolotsk in the north like Dmitry Korobov, or Ontario like Lalande and Platt. How they got here wasnt a matter of having Belarusian ancestry. Anyone who plays for Dynamo Minsk for two seasons is eligible for citizenship. "I got to keep my Canadian citizenship, so there wasnt really any downside," said Lalande, who began the tournament as a backup but has played too well for Hanlon not to start him. "At first it just made the travelling a lot easier in Russia, I didnt need a visa and saved a couple pages in my Canadian passport. But when Glen was named the head coach, we had a couple conversations together. He made it clear from the start that he wanted me to be a part of this." "Whether Id play or not he didnt know, but hes been very supportive. I owe everything to him for this chance." Lalande and Platt each praised the local players for accepting them while also noting theres a comfort level in having each other and an English-speaking coach around for this run. But Hanlon, who previously coached the Slovak national team, learned from his season with Jokerit in Finland that having Canadians on his team isnt easy. "Being an import coach you want to go out of your way so that the Canadians are respected," he said. "The last thing you want to do is look like youre favouring them." "So you want them to work for everything that they get, and I try to keep my space from them. I dont want to give anybody any reason to think that these players are going to get special treatment from me." No special treatment, but this experience has been special for Platt and Lalande, even though theyre not playing for their home country. Platt, who played 46 NHL games for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim Ducks, won a gold medal for Canada at the under-18 world championships in 2003. Platt hasnt represented Canada since and has moved on. "Not putting on the Canadian jersey now is just a chapter that sits in the past in my career," the 28-year-old said. "I was very fortunate to wear the Canadian jersey and win a gold medal at the under-18 level, and now this is a realistic goal to be playing with Belarus and to be competing at this level. Its really fun when were successful." Belarus was plenty successful in the preliminary round, going 4-3 to finish third in its group, ahead of Finland, Switzerland and Latvia and set up a quarter-final game against Sweden on Thursday night. Even if Sweden ends Belaruss run, the host teams performance wont be forgotten any time soon. When a victory over Latvia clinched a spot in the quarter-finals, Platt called it a "very rare opportunity for Belarusian ice hockey" that his teammates capitalized on. Lalande couldnt come up with words to describe his emotions. "We did it for ourselves because we believed," Lalande said, crediting fans who made a real impact on the team. "I think all of the Minsk and the whole countrys behind us right now. ... Were playing for us and were playing for them and its a tremendous feeling to be able to win in this fashion for them." Thats Hanlons priority, too. More than six years after being fired by the Capitals on U.S. Thanksgiving Day, he has no plans to return to coaching in the NHL and has invested a lot of time and energy on European hockey. Hanlon still keeps track of whats going on in North America and watches games because hes interested, but now the 57-year-old also checks on scores from leagues around Europe. Hes still a Canadian citizen, but the prospect of playing his native country doesnt mean anything to him anymore. "Whats special for me is winning for Belarus," Hanlon said. "Thats whats special." (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs will try to play spoiler as the Los Angeles Kings will try to match their longest winning streak in over four years in Thursdays battle at Staples Center. Watch the Kings vs. Maple Leafs live tonight on TSN starting at 10:30pm et/7:30pm pt. Toronto hopes to rebound after having a three-game winning streak halted in its last outing. The Maple Leafs were pounded 6-2 by the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, losing one night after beginning a five-game road trip with a 3-1 win in Anaheim. Jake Gardiner registered both Toronto tallies in Tuesdays loss, while James Reimer allowed all six goals on 48 shots for the Leafs. "I thought we did a lot of things that gave them a lot of opportunities, specifically turning the puck over," said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. Toronto, which fell to 13-13-7 as the road club this season, is still in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Leafs are one point ahead of Montreal and three in front of fourth-place Tampa Bay. L.A. has won two straight and three of the last four meetings against the Maple Leafs overall, but Toronto has claimed the past two encounters at Staples Center. The Kings have won eight games in a row and seven of those victories have come after the Olympic break. The time off in February apparently was productive for Los Angeles, which had dropped nine of 11 games before the league went on hiatus for the Sochi Olympics. Another victory tonight would give L.A. its first nine-game winning streak since Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010, but a former teammate could prevent that from happening as Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier gets set to make his return to the Staples Center. Bernier, who served primarily as Jonathan Quicks backup during his time with the Kings, was dealt to Toronto last summer in exchange for forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft pick. Frattin and Scrivens have since been traded by L.A., while Bernier is having a terrific debut season with the Leafs, going 25-16-7 with a 2.59 goals against average and .926 save percentage in 49 games. Originally a first-round pick of Los Angeles in the 2006 draft, Bernier had a 29-20-6 career record with six shutouts and a 2.36 GAA in 62 games with the Kings. He expects to get the start tonight and has a chance to end the Kings recent hot streak. Thanks to the recent surge, the Kings are sitting comfortably in third place in the Pacific Division, nine points ahead of Phoenix for the last of the divisions three automatic bids to the playoffs. L.A. is still nine points behind San Jose for second place and 11 points behind Anaheim for the top spot. The Kings are back home on Thursday after a perfect three-game road trip. Los Angeles is beginning a five-game homestand tonight and is 19-10-3 at Staples Center this season. The club capped its recent swing with Mondays 3-2 regulation win at Calgary. Anze Kopitar scored the eventual winner in the third period as Los Angeles survived a late push from the Flames to pick up the win at the Saddledome. Trevor Lewis and Justin Williams scored for the Kings, while Martin Jones made 24 saves in the win. "Good way to finish off the trip. We did what we wanted," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "If you score three on the road you should win the hockey game." Quick expects to get the start for L.A. on Thursday. The Kings No. 1 backstop is 2-1-0 with a 2.62 goals against average and .910 save percentage in three career games against the Maple Leafs. Kings forward Jordan Nolan is eligible to return tonight after sitting out the last game due to a suspension. Its their profession. Its our profession. Its going to be our job and the leaders of this team to lead. This is exactly when you find out who your guys are, Payton added. If its not happening ... then were going to look at other options. Thanks to the overall struggles of all four teams in the NFC South, the Saints have had an unusually large margin for error this season. But with only three games left, that margin is thinning.Despite falling to 5-8, the Saints returned to work Monday eliminated from NFC wild card contention but very much alive in the NFC South race, just a half-game behind first-place Atlanta before the Falcons played at Green Bay on Monday night.Yet Payton seemed to be judging his teams post-season chances more by what hes seen on the field than in the standings when he said, The only reason were sitting here still with that small sliver of hope is just because the way the division has unfolded this year. The Saints, who return to action next Monday night in Chicago, have lost four of five games, with two of those losses by three or more scores. Sundays beating was the seasons worst, not only on the scoreboard but also in the context of who the opponent was and what was at stake.New Orleans entered the game tied for first in the division, preparing to play at home against a Carolina squad that had not only lost six straight, including a 28-10 loss to New Orleans on Oct. 30.Odds makers had forecast a 10-point Saints victory.Payton wasnt bothered much by the physical effort his players put forth, saying he didnt see a ton of loafs.Rather, his film review revealed myriad mental mistakes.Man, I saw alignment problems. II saw execution problems.dddddddddddd I saw guys not aligned with leverage the way theyre supposed to be. I saw poor tackling, dropped balls, turnovers, fumbles, Payton said. Now, if youre on your guy and he makes a play, thats one thing. But too often, Payton said, that wasnt the case.Saints right tackle Zach Strief described himself as angry, adding that too many players seemed unaware of the mental intensity required on game days. He said he was also angry at himself, as a team captain, for not doing more to counter that.In practice, Strief said, the Saints consistently work hard, but too often show up for games looking too relaxed.I know what it looks like when a team is ready, Strief said, adding that he didnt see that Sunday. I dont think its guys walking in like, I dont care. ... I think its not realizing how up you have to be for every game to be successful.NFL players sometimes talk about learning to channel a sort of adrenaline-infused, temporary insanity in order to attain the requisite ferociousness to perform against equally powerful, talented and motivated athletes in a violent game.As an example, Strief described how former Saints fullback Jed Collins, now with Detroit, unleashes a primordial roar after the national anthem. For Jed, that was like a trigger transforming Collins from his laid-back, usual self to his hyped-up, game-day persona, Strief said. We dont have enough guys that have that trigger.Second-year safety Kenny Vaccaro said hed read comments by Saints veterans including quarterback Drew Brees about the need for greater maturity and professionalism across the roster. He said young players, himself included, need to take that message to heart and not be offended by it.They laid the foundation, those guys that were here before us, Vaccaro said. I wasnt here when they won the whole thing, and thats the standard. So whatever Ive got to do to get to that, Ill do it.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
MINNEAPOLIS -- Sitting in his office about 10 feet away from the Kansas City Royals locker room, manager Ned Yosts voice was nearly drown out by the thunderous hip hop music blaring and the full-throated cackling from his players in the next room. The young Royals have good reason to celebrate these days. Alcides Escobar tied a career high with four RBIs on two doubles and Salvador Perez homered to lift the Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. "Thats what we need," Perez said. "Have some fun and play the game hard." Danny Duffy (5-7) gave up one run and four hits while striking out three in 5 2-3 innings and Mike Moustakas had two hits for the Royals. Kansas City (43-39) has won three of four and is off to its best start since 2003. "Were very confident in what we have in the tank," Duffy said. "Weve got a great offence, great lineup. The defence is always flashing the leather. When we go out there and make pitches, its going to be a good night." Yohan Pino (0-2) gave up four runs and seven hits while also striking out three in 5 2-3 innings for the Twins. Eduardo Nunez had two hits and an RBI in his return from the disabled list for Minnesota, which has lost six of its last seven games to drop into last place in the AL Central. "Weve been facing some pretty decent pitching, and I dont know if its pressing," said manager Ron Gardenhire, whose Twins went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. "I just know were just not getting enough big hits right now. Were not putting any runs on the board. A lot of pressure on our pitchers to be really good." The Royals entered the night 3 1/2 games behind Detroit in the division and 1 1/2 games out of the AL wild card. For a team that has been endlessly rebuilding and hasnt made the playoffs since 1985, those are encouraging numbers as the season reaches its midpoint. They grabbed everyones attention with a 10-game winning streak that vaulted them into first place in June, but had lost seven of 10 games as the bats cooled off. The Royals signed 42-year-old Raul Ibanez on Monday, hoping he can help boost the teams scuffling offence and give a little extra support to a solid starting rotation. Ibanez broke into the big leagues with the Royals a decade ago, but hit just .157 in 57 games for the Angels this season. They had plenty of offence with him on the bench on Monday night. Pino was shaky early, getting tagged for a two-run double by Escobar in the second inning and an RBI-single from Alex Gordon in the fourth to fall behind 3-0. Perezs solo homer in the sixth ended Pinos day and the Royals took advantage of two throwing errors by second baseman Brian Dozier in the eighth, padding their lead with Escobars second two-run double of the game. "When youre not going good, youre not capitalizing on mistakes," Yost said. "When youre playing well, you do capitalize on mistakes. Thats exactly what we did tonight, which was big. Those were two big runs right there. Thats a lot of breathing room." NOTES: Twins GM Terry Ryan said prized prospect Byron Buxton is getting close to returning from a wrist injury that has kept him out for most of the season. LUCIE, Fla.Although UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao is among the worlds best mixed martial artists, hes still working on building a significant fan base in North America. His biggest fan in the world just might be UFC President Dana White, and thats just one reason Barao is the star of UFC 173. Barao (34-1) faces T.J. Dillashaw in the main event at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Saturday, headlining the UFCs traditional Memorial Day weekend card in its hometown. "I think (Barao) is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," White said. "I love this guy." Its tough to argue with White, given Baraos 22-fight winning streak and perfect record in UFC competition. The 135-pound Brazilian dynamo excels with both jiu-jitsu and strikes, fighting with a flair that has led to stoppages in six of his last nine fights. "I think I have a lot to improve in my game, but its always a pleasure to hear from your boss that you are the No. 1," Barao said. "This is the recognition of the hard work and training." Barao likely faces bigger obstacles than Dillashaw (10-2), a heavy underdog, on his path to stardom. Barao is a champion of a lighter weight class, which makes him traditionally less interesting to many fight fans. He also doesnt speak much English, making him tough to promote in North America. Even his Brazilian fans dont know much about his personality outside the cage -- although at least they know his last name isnt actually Barao, the Portuguese word for Baron and a nickname given to him by his grandmother. But with the UFC looking for new attractions in the absence of Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva, Barao is getting a chance to show off his incredible skills on another major stage, and White is confident fans will figure out what theyre seeing. "With Anderson, it took a long time for people to catch on," White said of his long-reigning former middleweight champion. "It doesnt happen overnight. When you look at the numbers, its all there. (Barao) is a killer. He tries to go in there and finish. Hes the type of guy I like to watch fight." Dillashaw worked his way into position for a title shot with fivve wins in six fights, but his matchup with Barao is the fourth fight that has been scheduled to headline this card.dddddddddddd The Northern California native is eager to take advantage of the chance created when Raphael Assuncao, who beat Dillashaw by split decision last October, dropped out of this title shot with a rib injury. "Hes a great champion, but everyone has holes in their game," Dillashaw said. "Hes sloppy in exchanges, but he makes it work because hes a big, powerful athlete. I need to stay with what Im good at and use my angles to disrupt his power." Just in case Baraos fight against a game underdog doesnt intrigue enough pay-per-view buyers, UFC 173 also features light heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier against veteran Dan Henderson, along with a bout between welterweights Robbie Lawler and Jake Ellenberger. Cormier (14-0) is also a rising name in the UFC, but hes not a tough sell. The talkative former Olympic wrestler has been a dynamic fighter in Strikeforce and the UFC at heavyweight and light heavyweight, where hes currently closing in on a title shot against pound-for-pound contender Jon Jones. Henderson (30-11) is a significant underdog, but any fighter is just one punch away from disaster when hes in the cage with the 43-year-old veteran whose knockout power is no longer aided by testosterone replacement therapy. "(Hendersons) big right hand is the single biggest weapon in MMA, even more dangerous than Ronda Rouseys armbar," Cormier said. "It can come at any time from any direction. No question thats what makes this a dangerous fight. But Ive made a career of making those guys, who possess that something special, like they never had it. I need to stay super-focused and avoid those punches." Although Henderson has lost three of his last four fights, he knocked out Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in spectacular fashion just two months ago. "I want to knock everyone out that I fight," Henderson said. "Its not always the easiest thing to pull off, but Ive done pretty well with it throughout my career. And its definitely nice knowing you have that power going into a fight." ' ' '
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyrie Irving and LeBron James combined for 69 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers went into Staples Center and beat the LA Clippers 126-121 on Friday. Irving scored a game-high 37 points, hitting 12-for-18 from the floor and five of his seven 3-point attempts. James continued his strong play since missing a career-high eight straight games with knee and back injuries, tallying 32 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Tristan Thompson filled in admirably for the injured Kevin Love, adding 24 points and 12 boards in the spot start. Love missed the game with back spasms. Cleveland, which had lost six in a row before arriving at Staples Center for Thursdays game against the Lakers, has won back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game win streak in mid-December. The Cavs trailed for most of the third quarter and early in the fourth, but flipped the script with seven straight points. Irving started the flurry with a 3 and James capped it with a three-point play. After DeAndre Jordans alley-oop had the Clippers within 104-102, Irving hit another triple to keep them at arms length. The lead grew to 10 points on James well-contested 3 at 4:35. With less than a minute to play and the Cavaliers holding a 119-115 lead, Irving was trapped near midcourt and they were forced to use a timeout. On the ensuing inbounds, James fired a pass to Thompson, who had wiggled free after setting a screen for Irving, at the basket for a layup plus a foul. Thompson made the free throw to make it 122-115. Turnovers on consecutive possessions led to a pair of LA baskets, but Matthew Dellavedova made two from the stripe with nine seconds to play to secure the win. Blake Griffin had 34 points and 10 boards, Chris Paul totaled 15 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds and Jordan had 19 points and 12 boards in defeat. The game also marked history, as the Clippers became the first team in league history to have a father coach his son in an NBA game. Austin Rivers, son of coach Doc Rivers, was acquired in a trade from Boston earlier this week. Rivers suited up and played 12 scoreless minutes off the bench, finishing 0- for-4. Irvings 3 early in the third gave the Cavs a 72-71 lead. The Clippers scored the next eight points, prompting Cleveland to use a Hack-A-Jordan strategy, fouling Jordan nearly every trip down the floor and forcing the career 42 percent free throw shooter to prove it from the line. Jordan shot 5-for-12 in the period and the Clips played solid defense on the other end as they built a pair of nine-point leads. Two free throws from Jamal Crawford at 2:53 made it 91-82, but Cleveland pulled to within 95-92 after three. Earlier, Cleveland shot 58.1 percent in the first half but trailed 64-61 at halftime. Game Notes James passed the 24,000 point mark, becoming the youngest player in league history to reach that milestone ... The Cavaliers have two days off before returning to Cleveland for a four-game homestand ... Paul has at least 14 assists in four straight games against Cleveland ... Rogers hopes hockey fans will be much more supportive of a few experiments its integrating into broadcasts this season. But you wont see them on TV. And if youre not a Rogers customer, youre out of luck. The new innovations can be found inside Rogers NHL GameCenter Live product, which lets hockey fans stream games on a computer, smartphone or tablet, and on a TV via a set-top box or video game console.Users can watch a game the traditional way, just as it looks on TV, or tap into the GamePlus feature. For games that Rogers is producing, viewers can toggle between a number of extra camera angles available exclusively through the app.Referees will have cameras mounted on their helmets for the Ref Cam stream, which can look a bit shaky but offers fans an on-ice close-up of the action. Most people when they watch the game they watch it from the 3D perspective, where theyre looking down on the ice, and it all looks so very easy and clear because you can see open ice, you can see the open man so clearly as a fan, said NHL great Mark Messier, who has been doing promotional work for Rogers. But from a players perspective ... youre looking at 10 players on the ice with no room, all coming together, and I think its going to give the people a better understanding of what the players actually see. Itll also give fans a better perspective of what the referees see or dont see because of their angles. The POV Cam zooms in on the teams benches and provides close-ups along the blue lines. The overhead goal-line cameras used during instant replays are available within GamePlus, and users can also select the Star Cam, which follows one particular player all game. For Toronto Maple Leafs home games, users can also access the Sky Cam, which has been installed in the Air Canada Centre. The camera is attached to a cable that runs the length of the rink and it can rapidly follow the play from end to end.During games, Rogers staff will be updating a section of the app called MyReplay, which will highlight the best alternate angles of goals, scoring chances and other key moments.Accessing GamePlus requires a seasons subscription to Rogers NHL GameCenter Live, which includes the playoffs, at a cost of $179.dddddddddddd99 through Monday, or $199.99 afterwards. Rogers Internet or mobile data customers can get a free trial that will run until Dec. 31.Non-Rogers customers can sign up for NHL GameCenter Live but they wont see GamePlus in their apps. GamePlus is available exclusively to Rogers customers. From a pure innovation-investment perspective, Rogers has invested millions of dollars and weve invested millions of dollars for our customers, said Keith Pelley, president of Rogers Media, in defending the exclusivity of GamePlus.Rogers estimates that streaming a game on a smartphone will eat through about one gigabyte of data, while streaming with any other device will use up two to five gigabytes. While some hockey fans might want to watch a game on their big screen TV while streaming GamePlus on another device theres one problem with that plan: the screens will be out of sync. TV broadcasts are typically about a minute ahead of online streams, Rogers said.___For hockey fans who dont have any money in their Apple App Store or Google Play accounts, here are a few free apps to install before Wednesday nights opening puck drop:Official team appsEach of the seven Canadian NHL teams has their own official app available to download for both Apple and Android devices, offering the basics like schedules, standings and player profiles. Each team also lets users follow the games live in a limited way, with some apps offering a visualized play-by-play of the action and some streaming live audio.News appsTSN has a dedicated hockey app (iOS only) with articles and tweets from writers including Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun. Users can sign up for notifications to be reminded when a game is starting, receive alerts for goals and penalties, and to get final scores. There are also links to stream audio from TSN radio stations in Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg. For those who want just one app to follow all their favourite sports, The Scores is top rated and a mainstay on best-of lists. It has a dizzying number of notification options for staying up to date on your favourite teams and players on your fantasy sports rosters. OTTAWA -- There is still some life in the Ottawa Senators. Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris scored twice Sunday as the Senators defeated the Calgary Flames 6-3, giving Ottawa seven points in its past four games. The win moves the Sens to within six points of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the second wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference with eight games remaining. "Well have to continue to play hard in those games and Ill like where well be at the 82-game mark. I might be dreaming but thats what I believe," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. Clarke MacArthur scored on a tip in 13 minutes into the third period after Jared Cowen had given the Senators a 4-3 lead a little over a minute into the third period. That third period was what allowed the Senators to keep their hopes alive. "We were very pleased with how we played the third period, giving up six shots, and the way we put the game away was good," MacLean said. Turris scored into an empty net and Robin Lehner made 37 saves allowing the Senators (31-29-14) to win back-to-back games on home ice for the first time since they won three straight in late December and early January. "In the third we continued to play our game and we were smarter and made better decisions," said Turris, who also had an assist. "We put the puck deep when we were up by one or two and we played our game the whole way through, we just made smarter decisions in the third." Matt Stajan, Paul Byron and Sean Monahan scored for the Flames (31-37-7) and Karri Ramo made 31 saves. The Flames could not have played a much better period than they did in the second as they outshot the Senators 21-9, but the best they were able to do after taking a 3-2 lead was go into the second intermission tied 3-3. Ottawa native Byron scored four minutes into the period for the Flames to tie the game as he corralled a rebound in the slot and put a shot into the top corner. It was only Byrons third career game in his hometown and he has a goal in two of those games. He scored his first goal in his second NHL game in early 2011 when he was a member of the Buffalo Sabres. "I always enjoy playing in Ottawa in front of friends and family and I appreciative of all the things theyve done for me over the years," said Byron, who played his junior hockey across the Ottawa River with the QMJHLs Gatineau Olympiques, where he starred alongside Claude Giroux, now captain of the Philadelphia Flyers. "Its hard to stay focused sometimes and you get distracted getting tickets and putting people on lists to see after (the game). I just try to stay focused and Im happy I have success here." A little more than three minutes after Byron tied the game, former Ottawa 67s standout Sean Monahan scored to give the Flames a 3-2 lead as he picked the corner over Lehners left shoulder. The goal was the 20th of the season for Monahan, making him the third rookie this season to reach that plateau along with Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche (23) and Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning (22). Losing that lead wasnt something Monahan or the rest of the Flames were particularly proud of. "I dont know what it was but like I said its not a game we can lose and its pretty upsetting. They capitalized on their chances and they put the puck in the back of the net. Thats something that we can fix and theyre simple mistakes," Monahan said. "We had a lot of chances and unfortunately we couldnt capitalize on some of them. At the end of the day we have to find a way to pull out the win." The Senators had gone into the second period with a 2-1 lead as Michalek sandwiched goals around one from Stajan. Michalek opened the scoring when he redirected a point shot from Erik Karlsson past Ramo at 10:42. Less than three minutes later though, Stajan jumped into the slot and buried a pass from behind the net past Lehner. Michalek re-established a one-goal lead for the Senators thanks to some terrific patience from Jason Spezza. The Senators captain moved around a sliding Calgary defenceman behind the goal-line, cut back out in front and slid a backhand pass that Michalek buried for a 2-1 lead. Notes: Cody Ceci, Bobby Ryan and Colin Greening were scratches for the Ottawa Senators while scratches for the Calgary Flames were Bryce Van Bradrant, Ladislav Smid, Dennis Wideman, Kenny Agostino, David Jones, Ben Hanowski and Markus Granlund. ...The game was the first Ceci has missed in his career since he was called up from Binghamton in early December. He played in 41 straight games. ... The Flames have played in 45 one-goal games this season and remain one shy of establishing a new franchise record. Their record in those games is 22-16-7. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Carlos Pena is back in the major leagues with the team that drafted him in the first round quite a while ago. Pena rejoined the Rangers on Tuesday, a week after signing a minor league deal and going to Triple-A Round Rock, and 13 years after making his major league debut with Texas. He was the 10th overall pick in 1998. "God is good, man. Here I am, where it all started for me and its truly very special," Pena said the home series opener against Detroit on Tuesday night, when he was batting sixth and playing first base. "Just to think back where it all started. ... This is crazy. I was looking at a picture I had of my first at-bat ever and it was with a Rangers uniform. My wife sent it to me this morning." The Rangers designated first baseman/outfielder Brad Snyder for assignment when they purchased the 36-year-old Penas contract from Round Rock. Since losing Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland to season-ending injuries, Snyder was splitting time at first base with Donnie Murphy. Neither Snyder nor Murphy had played first base in the major leagues before this season. "We just brought in a first baseman to play first base, and he has a presence," manager Ron Washington said. "He may be a little older, but he has presence. Throw something in the wwrong spot, and he will hurt you.dddddddddddd He knows how to play around that bag. He knows what to do, he knows where to be. Its second nature to him." In seven games at Round Rock, Pena hit .333 (8 for 24) with one home run. The only person to go longer between games for the Rangers was Sammy Sosa, who made his major league debut for Texas in 1989 and then played his final season there in 2007. Fielder had a cervical fusion of the C5 and C6 disks in his neck last month. Moreland had ligament reconstructive surgery and bone realignment in his left ankle Monday, and the team said he went home to Mississippi. Fielder and Moreland are expected to be ready for spring training next season. After playing 22 games for the Rangers, Pena was traded to Oakland that winter. He has also played for Detroit, Boston, Tampa Bay, the Chicago Cubs, Houston and Kansas City. He was an All-Star in 2009 with Tampa Bay, when he had an AL-high 39 homers. Pena went to spring training with the Los Angeles Angels, but was released March 23 after hitting .139 in 20 spring games. "I was training. I was staying ready. I had faith that something was going to happen," he said. "At the same time, I didnt want to force it. I wanted to make sure it was right and it was the right spot, the right situation." ' ' '

Roger-Vasselin ground out a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over big-serving Ante Pavic of Croatia, before Dodig followed up with a 7-5, 6-2 win against wild card Olivetti of France. The 26-year-old Redditch, England, native played three of his past four seasons under Rennie with the Carolina RailHawks of the North American Soccer League.CHICAGO -- Andrew Shaw stopped a long scoring drought. Jonathan Toews had another big game. The Chicago Blackhawks had 13 players with at least one point. Yup, those line changes worked out pretty well for the Stanley Cup champions. Shaw and Toews had two goals apiece, and the Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-1 on Thursday night to keep pace in the Western Conference playoff race. "I think all the lines had some chemistry tonight," Shaw said. "It was a big win for us." Brandon Bollig and Bryan Bickell also scored as Chicago bounced back from a 4-2 home loss to Colorado on Tuesday night. Corey Crawford made 22 saves for his 10th consecutive victory against Columbus. With St. Louis and Colorado also winning, the Blackhawks remained two points back of the Blues for the Central Division lead and one point ahead of the Avalanche. "Were motivated to build ourselves into the team we want to be come playoff time, but that adds to it to keep us honest, to make sure were competing the right way every night," Toews said, highlighting the bunched standings out West. Ryan Johansen scored his 25th goal for the Blue Jackets, who had won three in a row. Sergei Bobrovsky made 14 stops before he was pulled during the Blackhawks three-goal second period. "We werent emotionally into the game," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "The intensity wasnt there. I thought we lacked intensity. It wasnt everyone. We had some guys that wanted to get involved, but there were too many guys who werent involved in the game." The Blackhawks had managed just eight goals while dropping three of four, and five of those came against Pittsburgh at Soldier Field on Saturday. That prompted coach Joel Quenneville to shuffle his lines, putting Shaw with Toews and Brandon Saad in the top group and moving Patrick Sharp to the second line with Michal Handzus and Patrick Kane. It worked. After Johansen took advantage of a bad line change to tie it at 1 at 7:56 of the first, it was all Blackhawks. They outshot the Blue Jackets 33-23 for the game and lead the NHL with 221 goals. "Jonnys line had the big night, with several offensive zone shifts, some real nice plays and some nice (finishes) as well," Quenneville said. Shaw said iit was his first time playing on the same line with Toews since his first NHL game on Jan.dddddddddddd 5, 2012, at Philadelphia. Shaw also scored in that one, with Toews picking up an assist. For all that time apart, they sure looked pretty comfortable together. Shaw sparked the runaway win when he made the most of a terrific pass by Sheldon Brookbank, beating Bobrovsky into the upper right corner with 3:16 left in the first. Brookbanks long pass banked off the boards and sprung Shaw for a breakaway on the right side of the ice. "It was unbelievable. I think we just made eye contact and we knew what we were going to do," Shaw said. Chicago added three more in the second, highlighted by Saads impressive series of moves that set up Toews for an easy score. Saad skated around James Wisniewski and Nathan Horton before he was stopped by Bobrovsky. The rebound went right back to Saad, who passed to Toews on the other side of the net to make it 3-1 eight minutes into the second. Bickell had a rebound score that chased Bobrovsky and Brent Seabrooks slap shot went off Shaw and past Curtis McElhinney with 2:16 left in the period. It was the 16th goal for Shaw, who stopped an 11-game drought. Toews added a power-play goal in the third for his 24th of the season. The captain has five goals and an assist in the last three games. "Its frustrating because we didnt play our game and who knows what these points, what difference theyll make at the end of the season," Johansen said. It was more than enough for Crawford, who improved to 10-2-0 in his career against the Blue Jackets. He made a nice save on Matt Calverts backhand in the first and turned away Nick Foligno on a close opportunity in the second. NOTES: Blue Jackets D Nikita Nikitin left in the second period with an upper body injury. Richards said Nikitin would travel with the team to Nashville, and then be re-evaluated. ... Blackhawks C Peter Regin missed the morning skate, but Quenneville said he was resting and he had 15 shifts in the game. ... The Blue Jackets scratched LW Blake Comeau, RW Corey Tropp and Ds Ryan Murray and Cody Goloubef. ... Ds David Rundblad and Michal Rozsival, plus injured F Marian Hossa, were the scratches for the Blackhawks. ' ' '
